DonauArt
Guide

2018

Water is life. A river is a habitat, a cultural setting, a boundary and a link. The region centrally shaped by the Danube is a social space that is constantly in motion, undergo- ing changes and thus allowing for cultural diversity.

The Danube ows through 10 countries on its route to the sea – more than any other river in the world. For over two thousand years, it has been Europe’s political, com- mercial, and cultural lifeline. The city of Linz has a privileged location on the Danube and is celebrating this fact in 2018 with DonauArt – an inter-institutional exhibition project.

Contemporary artworks will be on display in the city’s exhibition spaces and public areas. The element of water is the main theme and source of inspiration.

The Austrian photographer Inge Morath (1923-2002) undertook journeys on and along the Danube over the course of many years. In 2014 eight young photogra- phers set out following her traces and traveled from the source of the Danube to the Black Sea: 34 days, over 2800 kilometers, in 19 cities. This resulted in photogra- phic positions which form a richly multifaceted image of the cultural region of the Danube.

    24. Mai-2. September 2018
Roman Signer repeatedly works with “props” and has in this way created a kind of iconography of his own, which draws from everyday life, but is still unmistakably his. Water also often plays a role. The “sculptural events” he initiates are subject to the laws of physics. And as is often the case, as Signer says, he leaves the final arrangement of the work up to the forces of nature.

Water is the focus of HÖHENRAUSCH 2018. Amorphous, volatile, and fluid, water has always been a foreign element for those con ned to the land. Infinitely boundless, life-giving, belonging to no one and following its own laws, water is at the same time a perilous liminal space and a nearly insurmountable boundary, at turns “barbarically” disconcerting and devastating. More than 40 international artistic contributions show how contradictory the element of water can be: a place where we may run aground or set sail for new shores, a place of exchange or conquest and also a utopia. The HÖHENRAUSCH circuit with its walkways, bridges and stairs, the various art spaces, attics, and the vast roof landscape high above Linz forms the atmospherically charged backdrop for this extraordinary art project.

    Mariendom
    24. Mai-14. Oktober 2018
With his audiovisual installation, Georg Nussbaumer brings the many disused gargoyles of the Mariendom back to life. At certain times of day, the cathedral is temporarily immersed in a burbling, splashing or murmuring “cloud,” or, on windy days, a fog of spray. Depending on the strength of the flow, rivulets of water gradually become “waterfalls,” which slowly taper off and dry up again.

“BLUE” visualizes in real time the ow velocity, wave formation and water level of the Danube. Bubbles swim by regularly, constantly collecting information on the internet about the river and its surroundings. When visitors collide with them, they burst and deliver their information. The installation changes according to the time and weather conditions and is therefore created anew every second.

“Flow” by Poyraz Yildirim makes you feel like you’re standing in the middle of a raging river. At the bottom of Deep Space 8K, thousands of small arrows “flow” from one wall to the other, while in the background the roaring of a river can be heard. When you step into the projection area amidst the arrows, they change their flow.

    15. Juni-19. August 2018
Examining the process of work is a dominant concern for Katharina Gruzei. The series Bodies of Work focuses on the Linz shipyard ÖSWAG. Camera in hand Gruzei accompanied the construction of a large ferry over a period of two months. The artist took photographs also at times when the shipyard was not in operation. As darkness settles on the premises and the noise of the machines dies down, motifs begin to appear in a different light altogether.

Perched on a high seat, the class for space&design- STRATEGIES of the Art University Linz overlooks those areas endangered by the water: a landscape of possibilities and consequences of flooding spreads out under the arch of the LENTOS. How do we re-interpret this unavoidable change in the future we hope for, what is the potential of this catastrophe? Fictitious scenes become the mirror image of a global reality. The water is coming, the life guards are called into action ... in slow motion.
